Highway of Holiness
Heart of God Articles
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland" (Isaiah 43:19).
For those who are called by Him throughout the world, the mighty hand of God lifts them up and places their feet on a new way, a path unlike any other they have ever traveled upon. He sets them on a supernatural highway that leads them home to their Heavenly Father.
Once placed upon this incredible course, their lives are never the same again. They never look back, their faces are set like flint, for the joy set before them. God places His Beloved on the road marked for glory.
"To be 'holy' simply means to be set apart for God."
How do we know if we are on God’s path for our lives? What does this road look like? Where does it take us? The Word of God tells us about this ancient highway, along which the Lord has been leading His chosen people since the beginning of time.
Isaiah 35:8
And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that Way. The unclean will not journey on it; wicked fools will not go about on it.
The verse above tells us the first way to recognize God’s road for our lives. Isaiah describes it as “the Way of Holiness.” To be “holy” simply means to be set apart for God.
When God places us on His highway, He sets us apart from the world, and sets our feet on a brand new path. The Scripture states that this path is for those who “walk on that Way.” This highway is not for the world, but for those who are destined for God’s glory. Walking on God’s highway, we begin to see a contrast as we look at ourselves. We see a transformation taking place!
We can see very clearly how the Lord placed His people on His holy highway in the book of Exodus. Under the rule of Pharaoh in the land of Egypt, God’s people were heavily oppressed. They found themselves forced to work long hours with nothing to show for it, living in misery and hopelessness. Like hamsters in a wheel, their striving led them nowhere. They soon found that it did not pay to serve Pharaoh, and they cried out to their God to rescue them from this meaningless path. It was at this time that God showed up on the scene.
Highway of Holiness
The first thing God set out to do was to place His people on a highway of holiness. How did He do this? God set His people apart and placed them onto His path for their lives. He said to Pharaoh in Exodus 8:1b,
Let my people go, that they may serve me.”
"Today, God is in the same miracle-working business for those on His highway of holiness."Have we come to the place in our lives where we, like the Israelites, cannot go on with the burden of serving Pharaoh? Do we find ourselves moving through this world like a hamster in a wheel, without purpose or destiny? When we remain on the path of this world, we are enslaved to Pharaoh, which means we are in bondage to all that masters us. Today, many find themselves enslaved to their careers, sports, status, or even physical appearance. Others cannot find an escape from addiction, while still others walk in the bondage of fear… fear of failure, fear of not having enough, fear of loss or death.
The Lord says today, Let my people go, that they may serve me! God calls us to His path the same way He called the Israelites. He told His people to get ready for their new lives by getting rid of every unclean thing in their homes, every bit of yeast, every idol. He directed them to cover the doors of their homes with the blood of the Passover Lamb so that when the Angel of Death came in the night and brought judgment upon the Egyptians, it passed over God’s people. Not one was lost as they began their journey. God blazed a path of escape from the life of slavery.
The Lord still calls those who are His today to turn from their old ways and to come under the covering of the Lamb of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. It is under the covering of His pure and precious blood, His sacrifice unto death, that we may enter our destiny and escape the certain doom that the path of this world brings.
God’s path for us is a highway filled with the miraculous wonders of His hand, where His people are faced with circumstances in which they must put their faith and trust in their God. As the Israelites began their exodus, Pharaoh decided he wanted his slaves back and chased after them. Trapped between the Egyptian army and the Red Sea, the Israelites stepped into the water by faith, trusting God to make a way.
Exodus 14:21-22
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, 22 and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.
The people witnessed God’s miraculous power as He raised up two mountainous walls of water, protecting His people as they safely passed through, swallowing up every last one of the Egyptians as the waters returned to their place.
God’s people would never have to face their oppressors again.
Today, God is in the same miracle-working business for those on His highway of holiness. He seeks to glorify Himself through those who put their trust in Him.
Highway of Service
How will we know we are on God’s path for our lives? God’s highway is high above all other roads of life because it transfers us from a self-serving life to a life of serving God and others. In the passage below, Paul identifies this self-serving road.
"God’s purpose for delivering His people is to serve Him."
“But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people” (2 Timothy 3:3-5).
We see this selfish lifestyle in our society today. People move based upon emotion, opinion, social norms, what feels right to them. Have we left the highway of self?
Let’s take one last look at this verse again.“Let my people go, that they may serve me” (Exodus 8:1b). God’s purpose for delivering His people is to serve Him. He has destined His people for a purpose much greater than themselves: to bring God glory, to come to know Him and to make Him known.
For those who have been rescued from their lives of sin, from slavery, from bondage to Pharaoh… for those who have had their feet placed on higher ground, onto the highway of holiness, they are moving in full service to the living God. They work for Him. They serve Him. They love Him. Because He rescued them, they rescue others.
They are on the highway of service. There is no higher calling, no deeper satisfaction, no greater purpose than to live for God and others. As God blazed the way for the Israelites, He empowers us to become forerunners on His highway so that others may join us in this incredible journey.
Highway to the Father’s House
Make no mistake, my friends. Those on the highway of holiness have a destination in sight. They are on their way to the Father’s house! They walk the same narrow road that has been tread upon by thousands upon thousands of generations before them. They walk in victory under the covering of the Lord Jesus Christ, never looking back. They rejoice that Jesus made a way to be with the Father.
"When God calls a son, he is a son forever!"
We ask ourselves today, what road am I on? When God calls a son, he is a son forever! Am I living a life that is set apart from the world and in service to the living God? Have I joined the procession with God’s people on the road of faith that will lead me to my Father’s house? Let us look to Him with our face set like flint on the highway of holiness. Let nothing remain from our old life of bondage. Everything must go!
Let us serve others and lead them to the higher way! The world will marvel at how good our Master is and how different He is from what they have known. May God place our feet firmly on this miraculous path today, and let the journey begin!
